This workshop is designed for beginners and intermediate artists who want to master the fundamentals of oil paint, from brush handling and color mixing to creating rich, expressive compositions. Whether you’re seeking a creative discipline or a deeply satisfying form of self-expression, this is your studio home.
What You Will Learn
In this foundational course, you will gain confidence in:
Materials Mastery: Understanding the use of brushes, mediums (like solvents and oils), and how to properly care for your tools.
Color Theory: Mixing vibrant, accurate colors and understanding value (light and dark) to create form and depth.
Studio Practice: Establishing a sustainable and safe studio routine within the supportive environment of a working artist collective.

All classes run on Monday or Wednesday from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Dive Studios (Corktown, Detroit).
4-Week Intensive: Schedule flexible between Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings
$250 -Focus on foundational skills and still life painting.

Your tuition includes a complete starter kit, ensuring you can begin painting immediately. This comprehensive kit features everything you need for the duration of the course:

Hosted by Dive Studios, home to a community of 15 working artists, this series takes studio practice outdoors to capture the light, architecture, and dynamic energy of the surrounding neighborhood.
Designed for beginners and intermediate artists alike, this workshop focuses on the art of painting and drawing directly from life in the open air. Learn how to simplify complex outdoor scenes, work with changing natural light, and translate the urban landscape onto paper or canvas.
What You Will Learn
Plein Air Fundamentals: Setting up comfortably outdoors, selecting a subject, and establishing a strong composition quickly.
Light & Color Theory: Understanding natural light, color temperature, and value (light vs. dark) to create realistic atmospheric depth.
Materials & Efficiency: Working effectively with your chosen medium (oil, acrylic, watercolor, or drawing media) using streamlined field kits and proper tool maintenance outdoors.
Studio & Field Practice: Developing a sustainable sketching and painting routine within a supportive community of fellow artists.

Option 1: Base Tuition $150 Full 4-week instruction. Bring your own preferred painting or drawing supplies and portable easel setup.
Option 2: Tuition + Complete Field Starter Kit
$275 Full 4-week instruction plus a complete outdoor kit to keep, including lightweight aluminum field easel, canvas panels, paint set, brushes, palette, and field supplies.
